Burgess: lifting, her legacy

Senior Nikiya Burgess dominated the 3A Mississippi High School Activities Association powerlifting championship for the third year in a row, becoming a champion once again.

Burgess said she first started lifting weights with her family at a young age.

“In my family the boys always competed with the girls,” she said. “I was always determined to show them I was stronger and better than them in many ways. Football, kickball, board games and building things, it was a lot”.

The next step in her life is to compete in college athletics.

“My next step will be to attend Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama,” Burgess said.

Burgess received an academic scholarship. She plans to be in the band and hopes to become a worldrenowned “Honey Bee” dancer.

“Becoming ‘Ms. Powerlifting’ was my favorite moment from high school and being an influencer to show everyone that you can do whatever you want too, if you put forward the effort, too get it done and succeed without giving up.”

Burgess said she would not be where she is without her mom’s and her coaches’ help.

“I would like to thank my coaches for their unwavering support and the inspiration they have provided. Their guidance has been instrumental to my success. To my Mom, I want to thank her for being there every step of the way and for pushing me to become the young lady I am today,” Burgess said.
