Preparing for Fourth of July

One of the greatest celebrations we have in this country is our independence. It is our freedom. It is our country. On July 4, 1776, our country declared Independence. The Continental Congress signed and declared our 13 colonies to be separated from Great Britain. It is one of the most important holidays for our country to remember…our independence.

There are many ways to remember our independence and most of us get together with family and friends on the fourth. It’s always fun for family and friends to get together to celebrate and make memories. It may be in the backyard, around a pool, or on the river. It takes planning when you have a large crowd and when my family gets together there are over 50 present. To some that is a small crowd but either way it takes a lot of food to feed that many.

My dad always took the lead in making plans for the fourth of July. My mom would make sure we had enough for everyone to eat and the house was in order for family and guests.

We grew up on Wilson Lake so we all liked to be out on river sailing, water skiing, or canoeing. Some of us chose to stay at the pool or layout in the sun on the pier. The summer was fun and full of excitement. On the 4th of July we always set off fireworks. I can remember my dad holding the roman candles up and watching the bright red and blue colors bursting out of the top.

After we finished with our fireworks we watched the pyrotechnic fireworks being set off up the river at Turtle Point Golf and Yacht Club. They were always so bright and beautiful.

It was a full day of fun but the fireworks brought us back to why we were celebrating.

Fireworks are great, especially today. Holly Springs, just like other cities and parks, have a great pyrotechnic fireworks show.

Have you ever wondered or thought why we set off fireworks on the fourth of July or wondered who came up with that great idea. It started in Philadelphia, in 1777, when the Sons of Liberty fired a 13-gun salute in honor of our 13 colonies set off fireworks over the Boston Common.

Families have plenty of time to prepare for family and friends for this special day. It is only two weeks away. Don’t forget the fireworks.

Saturday was hot, but many came out to celebrate Juneteenth in downtown Holly Springs. Many sat along the covered sidewalks and stayed out of the hot sun, and others set up canopy tents on the courthouse lawn.

All who attended enjoyed music, food, and fun. Thanks to CareNow and others who were supported this event.

Friday night, Relay For Life of Marshall County celebrated its 25th year at Sam Coopwood Park, Holly Springs. Community members, churches, businesses, fraternities, and sororities set up canopy tents and enjoyed the fellowship and remembered those who lost their lives to cancer and to support those who are caregivers and celebrated those who have survived.
